A highly desirable South Devon Pub has been sold on a confidential basis, by leading Westcountry business transfer agent Charles Darrow.
Sitting in the South Devon village of Marldon, nestling in the folds of the South Hams, the property sits under the shadows of Saint John the Baptist Church, overlooking the village cricket field. The Church House Inn was originally built around 1400 and gave accommodation to the artisans working on the church, after which it became the meeting house for the church congregation and finally the Village Inn.
It was rebuilt in the early eighteenth century and has the most stunning listed Georgian windows. Some of the original glass remains, despite being next to the village cricket pitch – where “sixes” are now outlawed!
From the pub there are many beautiful country walks including the famous John Musgrave Heritage Trail which heads through Marldon past the pub and through the grounds of Berry Pomerory Castle on its way to Totnes. Ideally situated between Berry Pomerory Castle and Compton Castle the pub makes a perfect venue to relax and enjoy the hospitality after visiting one of these historic buildings.
Grade II listed, The Church House Inn has been recognised with a plethora of awards over the years including being the first pub in Devon to be listed in the Michelin Pub Guide and being voted Devon’s Best Country Pub by readers of Devon Life magazine.
Internally, the property has been methodically maintained over the years and is very much a turnkey operation, with an established and highly profitable trade – not to mention some of the staff who have been with the business for many years.
Jon Clyne , Director of Charles Darrow who handled the transaction commented “We were asked to undertake a covert marketing campaign by Julian, someone who I have known for many years, having frequented the business on more than one occasion! Julian owned the business for over 20 years, and you would be hard pressed to find a business with a better reputation. I believe we found the perfect buyers in Donna & Phil McCann who are popular multiple operators, owning several excellent pubs, most notably the Pig & Whistle at Littlehempston. They plan to continue to operate the business in a similar vein to Julian and we wish them all the best”.
The business was sold off an undisclosed asking price.
