Lyn recently visited Martin and Jo Brandon at The Cherwood Guest House in Paignton to learn more about their journey into hospitality and what makes life on the English Riviera so special.
After years in what they describe as “normal jobs”, Martin and Jo made the move into hospitality five years ago and haven’t looked back. While they admit they work hard, they love the freedom that comes with running their own business.
“It’s been a wonderful lifestyle choice. Our time is our own and every day is different,” they said.
One of the biggest surprises has been the support from the local hospitality community.
“We couldn’t believe how friendly everyone was. Other guest house owners and hospitality businesses are always willing to share ideas, advice and best practice. It’s a very welcoming industry.”
Guests at The Cherwood come from all walks of life, including birdwatchers, railway enthusiasts, dancers attending competitions, international visitors and multi-generational families enjoying holidays together.
“The children really bring the house to life during the summer,” said Jo.
With the beach at the end of the road, nearby parks, Paignton Zoo, the Dartmouth Steam Railway and a host of family attractions, there’s plenty to keep visitors entertained.
Martin and Jo pride themselves on the little details that make guests feel at home.
“We love it when guests say, ‘You’ve thought of everything.’ From everyday essentials to recommending the best local attractions and experiences, it’s those personal touches that people remember.”
The couple are passionate about promoting Torbay and the wider English Riviera. Torquay offers a vibrant marina and nightlife, Paignton is renowned for its family-friendly beaches and attractions, while Brixham provides stunning coastal scenery and the spectacular views from Berry Head.
With another busy summer ahead and many returning guests already booked in, Martin and Jo continue to enjoy the rewarding lifestyle they have created at The Cherwood.
