As Exeter’s city centre continues to evolve, two of its oldest and most iconic pubs have been sold and their new owners are vowing to keep their doors open and trade booming.
The Fat Pig
Dating back to the 19th Century, The Fat Pig has a back-street pub history and tradition like no other. And as one of the oldest surviving pubs in Exeter, the two-storey property in John Street is full of old school charm and character.
After a decade of success under charismatic former owner Hamish Lothian, the decision to sell was met with surprise across the city. But with much interest surrounding the sale, a deal was struck. Sold under a management buyout, new owner, Paul Timewell (Tiny), is looking to continue the pub’s brisk trade and build on its success over the coming months.
With plans already afoot, Paul will continue to trade with as little change as possible but is looking to add more events to the pub’s calendar, as well as developing the opening hours.
The Port Royal
Further changes to Exeter’s pub scene has seen renowned landlord, Carlos Pires, pulling his last pint at The Port Royal on the Quay. With the pub’s history dating back to the 1840s, it’s seen Carlos as landlord since 2005 and he’s weathered many a storm to see the legendary pub survive amid growing competition.
With retirement on his mind, Carlos made the decision to sell the pub, which also feature a popular restaurant. Now, with a leasehold sale recently agreed, The Port Royal begins a new chapter under new owner, Daniel Symns.
Though well known in the Exeter pub trade, Daniel’s a first-time owner, but will hit the ground running. With already robust trading figures and loyal custom, the chance to build on the pub’s success signals The Port Royal should continue to be one of Exeter’s premier waterside pubs.
On the sale of both pubs, Director of property agents, Charles Darrow, Jon Clyne, comments “Despite a plethora of new venues opening and closing in Exeter over the past 5 years, licence venues remain a popular attraction for many. The Fat Pig & Port Royal are two of Exeter best known pubs for which, we had plenty of interest and offers. Tiny & Daniel will add their own twist to both operations and we wish them the best of luck moving forward”.
