A closed Devon character pub will soon be re-opening its doors after being sold by regional commercial property specialist, Charles Darrow.
Between Crediton and Barnstaple, the two-storey Earl of Portsmouth pub is surrounded by glorious open countryside and is one of two pubs in the village of Chawleigh, Mid Devon. The freehold on the Earl of Portsmouth was being offered for sale off an asking price of at £250,000.
Having traded infrequently over the past 4 years, the freehold owner decided to put the property up for sale, with the property retaining many of its period features. The spacious ground-floor lounge bar has a central servery, open fireplaces, and seating for almost 50 people. This also doubles as a games room featuring two skittle alleys, pool table, and a darts area.
The Earl also has a light and airy dining room suitable for 32 covers. Featuring wood-stripped flooring and shaker-style wooden tables and chairs, it comes with a corner waitress station and full access to the main bar. The well-equipped commercial kitchen and temperature-controlled cellar both have access from the rear courtyard.
Externally, there is a garage and store, a customer car park with additional unrestricted parking in the village, and space for picnic benches for outside dining and drinks.
The pub also comes with spacious first-floor owner’s accommodation, comprising a lounge, bathroom, separate toilet, and three double bedrooms.
Jon Clyne, Director at Charles Darrow commented: “We received significant interest in the pub, including the local community which puts the pub in a positive position moving forward. Like all small communities, it is just so important to retain community assets for the ‘greater good’ and that is exactly what the purchaser has done”.
The new owner, Heather Penny intends to breathe new life into the property and there is absolutely no doubt, that will be well receive the wider community.
The property was registered as an Asset of Community Value, which it will now remain.
