In the South Hams Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, sits the popular market town of Kingsbridge. A tourist hotspot, renowned for its sailing heritage as well as its independent boutique shops and restaurants. The Old Bakery, a Grade II listed restaurant in the heart of town, has sold for its leasehold asking prices of just under £100,000.

19th Century charm
As a thriving business, The Old Bakery, has enjoyed robust trading figures and a healthy turnover for well over a decade. With its previous owner now moving on to other business ventures, new owner Ed Crocombe is ready to build on its success and it’s not hard to understand why he became so charmed by it.

Dating back to 1895, with its unique coachman’s entrance and cobbled pathway this secluded restaurant has all the charm and period features you’d expect. Together with its welcoming bar, reception area and ground floor Moroccan-styled restaurant, the property also makes use of enclosed courtyards at the front and rear for additional seating.

But its first-floor dining room is the restaurant’s showpiece. Built into the eaves, this light and spacious room features all original wood flooring, as well as a unique vaulted ceiling and exposed wooden beams.

Big plans for the future

It’s now down to Ed to make The Old Bakery his own, with plans for future refurbishment, a revitalised menu, and additional opening hours. He commented “The Old Bakery has a loyal following of locals and regular visitors to Kingsbridge and Salcombe. We plan to maintain the same high standards and favourite dishes but sympathetically update the menu.

“We’ll be recruiting new staff, including a new head chef, and looking to create a lunchtime menu to help increase our daytime opening hours. We also plan to start producing more ingredients in-house and offer these for sale outside of the restaurant. We’re excited to be taking on this fantastic restaurant and looking forward to its next chapter”.

Jon Clyne Director at Charles Darrow Commented: “The Old Bakery is an exceptional business that attracted an eclectic mix of customers all year round, hence achieving a robust sales figure. Ed has taken the business over at the perfect time, after many successful years of trading by Juliet, whom we wish all the best moving forwards. His plans are very exciting and I am sure, will be well received by locals and visitors alike”.

With over 500 ratings and reviews, and a Certificate of Excellence, on TripAdvisor, The Old Bakery is one of the most popular restaurants in Kingsbridge. Under new ownership and management, it looks like its continued success is in safe hands.
