Charming South Devon Village Inn Benefits From Speedy Sale

Continuing the upsurge in Pub sales across the region, The Union Inn in Denbury, an historic and charming 14th century inn, is the latest to be sold within days of going to market.

In a tourist haven like Devon it’s encouraging for local communities to see their traditional pubs become highly sought-after properties. Many buyers are keen to see the good old English pub not only survive, but thrive, and The Union Inn is a 14th century traditional inn that’s been purchased in double-quick time.

Situated in the South Devon countryside village of Denbury, just 4 miles southeast of Newton Abbot, the popular Union Inn has always enjoyed brisk trade all year round, with loyal customers and consistently strong turnover and profits.

Together with bar, restaurant, snug, and function room all featuring traditional flagstone floors and wooden beams, the inn enjoys use of the adjacent village green for external seating. The property also presents substantial 4-bedroom owners accommodation with lounge, kitchen, office, and family bathroom.

And it proved to be a tantalising prospect for potential buyers. Within two weeks of going on the market, the leasehold for The Union Inn was successfully purchased by locals, Rob Webb and Danni Matthews off an asking price of £65,000.

Well known in the village, Rob and Danni intend to continue to run the pub without any major changes, but will introduce a revamped, seasonal menu, appealing to a wider customer base.

The sellers, Tom & Axelle Haywood, who also operate the Passage House Inn in Kingsteington, commented: “We were delighted to agree terms so quickly with Rob & Danni whom we have known for a long-time and who will be great for the village. We have spent the last eight years reinvigorating the pub, taking it from a closed, tired looking property and we were very keen to ensure the next purchaser protected the pub for the village”.

With The Union Inn being the only pub in the village, it’s also home to the local shop, making it an essential centrepiece of continued community and village life.

Jon Clyne, Director at Charles Darrow commented: “We expected some strong interest in The Union Inn and given its location, condition and profitability, it was no surprise to agree terms to Rob & Danni so swiftly and we wish them every success for the future. Pubs really do seem to be having something of a renaissance and long may it continue”.
